Canada made major changes in the Super Visa Program for Parents and Grandparents

Since 2011, thanks to Canada’s Super Visa Program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents have been able to spend extended periods of time in Canada with their parents and grandparents. This multiple-entry visa, valid for up to ten years, has allowed parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to two years at a time. This makes the super visa more advantageous than a regular multiple-entry visitor visa, where the length of stay is usually limited to 6 months or less.

As Canada recovers from the pandemic, the federal government of Canada prioritized family reunification as a way to attract, sustain, and integrate skilled immigrants who contribute to our country’s success.

On June 7, 2022, major modifications to the Canada Super Visa Program were announced by the Honorable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, to keep families together. These modifications will make it easier for skilled immigrants to reconnect with their parents and grandparents in Canada. Furthermore, holders of a Super Visa will be permitted to stay for longer periods of time. These modifications will go into effect on July 4, 2022.

These changes are as follows:

  • The period of stay for super visa holders in Canada has been increased to 5 years per entry, up from 2 years.
  • People with a super visa in Canada can request to extend their stay for up to 2 years at a time.
  • International medical insurance providers (as recognized by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)) will be able to provide coverage to super visa applicants, whereas earlier, only Canadian insurance providers could provide the appropriate medical coverage.

Note: Any recognized medical insurance firms based outside of Canada will be announced on the IRCC Official Website at a later date.
