What are the steps to apply for Canada Express Entry?

To apply for Canada Express Entry, which is the system used by the Canadian government to manage applications for permanent residency, you need to follow these steps:

  • Determine your eligibility: Before applying, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements for one of the three federal immigration programs managed through Express Entry: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), or the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Each program has its own specific criteria, such as work experience, language proficiency, and education.
  • Complete a language test: To demonstrate your language proficiency in either English or French, you need to take an approved language test. The accepted tests are the IELTS for English and the TEF for French. Ensure you achieve the minimum required score for your program of choice.
  • Obtain an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): If you completed your education outside of Canada, you need to get your educational credentials assessed by a designated organization. The assessment will verify the equivalency of your education to Canadian standards.
  • Create an Express Entry profile: Create an online profile through the Canadian government’s official website. Provide detailed information about your skills, work experience, language proficiency, education, and other relevant factors. This profile will be assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on various factors, including age, education, work experience, language ability, and adaptability.
  • Obtain supporting documents: Gather all the necessary documents to support the information you provided in your profile. These may include identification documents, language test results, educational credentials, proof of work experience, and more. Ensure that all documents are properly translated and notarized if required.
  • Submit your profile: Once you have completed your profile and gathered all the required documents, submit your profile online. Your profile will then enter the Express Entry pool of candidates.
  • Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA): Based on your CRS score, candidates with higher scores will be selected from the pool during regular draws. If you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), you will have a limited time (usually 60 days) to submit a complete application for permanent residency.
  • Complete the application for permanent residency: After receiving an ITA, you must submit a complete application for permanent residency. This includes providing detailed information about your background, work experience, education, and other relevant factors. You may also need to undergo a medical examination and provide a police certificate.
  • Pay the fees: Pay the required application fees, which typically include the processing fee, the right of permanent residence fee (RPRF), and fees for any accompanying family members.
  • Wait for a decision: After submitting your application, you will need to wait for the Canadian government to process it. Processing times can vary, but you can check the current estimated processing times on the official government website.
