For Canada PR through Express Entry, the useful comparison is the score you can achieve in each language ability—not which test someone describes as the easiest. IELTS General Training, PTE Core and CELPIP-General are accepted English options. The right choice should fit your preparation and immigration target.
This guide focuses on score planning across all three accepted English tests. For a two-test overview, see our IELTS versus PTE Core comparison.
For many applicants in India, the immediate concern is reaching CLB 9 in all four abilities. That can matter beyond the basic language points. A high overall result can still leave one ability below the level needed for a particular points combination.
| Test | Accepted Express Entry version |
|---|---|
| IELTS | General Training; IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted for Express Entry. |
| Pearson PTE | PTE Core |
| CELPIP | CELPIP-General |
Do not book an academic test simply because you previously used it for study. Start with the immigration purpose, then choose the appropriate preparation plan. The test name on the booking matters.
CLB is the Canadian benchmark used to interpret English results. The score conversion applies separately to listening, reading, writing and speaking.
| Test | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS General Training | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| PTE Core | 82–88 | 78–87 | 88–89 | 84–88 |
| CELPIP-General | 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 |
These are CLB 9 equivalencies, not maximum useful scores. A higher result may convert to CLB 10 or above. Our Canada language score calculator lets you enter the four results separately.
No test gets a separate brand bonus. CRS uses the equivalent language level. The published first-official-language points per ability are:
| CLB | With accompanying spouse/partner | Without accompanying spouse/partner |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 16 | 17 |
| 8 | 22 | 23 |
| 9 | 29 | 31 |
| 10+ | 32 | 34 |
For example, without an accompanying spouse, CLB 9 across all abilities produces 124 first-language points; CLB 8 across all abilities produces 92. That 32-point difference is an illustration of this component, not a promised total CRS increase.
Skill-transferability combinations can also change. In the published foreign-experience/language table, three or more years of qualifying foreign work with CLB 9 in every ability gives 50 points, compared with 25 when all abilities are at least CLB 7 but one or more are below CLB 9. Other combinations and section caps still apply.
Consider an applicant scored without an accompanying spouse who has CLB 9 in listening, reading and speaking, but CLB 8 in writing. The first-language component is 31 + 31 + 31 + 23 = 116 points. Raising writing to CLB 9 makes it 124: an eight-point improvement in that component.
If the applicant also has three or more years of qualifying foreign work, that change can move the foreign-work/language combination from 25 to 50 points. That is a further 25 points in this particular combination, subject to the overall transferability limits. Other profile factors may change the net gain. This is why a targeted improvement in writing may be more useful than chasing a higher score in an ability already above the relevant threshold.
The Federal Skilled Worker language threshold is CLB 7 in every ability for English as the first official language. Meeting it is different from reaching a competitive CRS score. FSW uses a separate selection grid: CLB 7 provides four first-language selection points per ability, CLB 8 provides five, and CLB 9 or above provides six.
FSW selection points and CRS points must not be added together. A result sufficient to enter the pool does not guarantee an invitation. If your goal is stronger ranking, choose the target after assessing the full profile, not simply the minimum passing level.
There is no single answer that a consultant can promise for everyone. Before switching tests, identify why your current result is below target. A different test does not automatically resolve weak comprehension, grammar or organisation.
For coaching, explain the immigration target when you enquire. A generic English course and preparation aimed at a particular ability threshold may need different work.
Results must be less than two years old when you complete the Express Entry profile and when you submit the permanent residence application. A valid result at profile creation does not necessarily remain valid until application.
Avoid booking the wrong test version, using an overall average in place of four ability results, entering a mock result as an official score, or assuming that a language score guarantees an invitation. Keep the official report and its identifying details with your application records.
We can connect your language target to the immigration profile, explain which ability is limiting the relevant points combination and discuss whether a retake or change of test deserves consideration. Our IELTS and PTE coaching services offer a place to discuss preparation and support.
Share your four latest results, test date, intended program and family circumstances. We will distinguish an eligibility threshold from a score-improvement target. Coaching, exam results, invitations and visa decisions cannot be guaranteed.

PTE Core is an accepted Express Entry test. The correct version matters; it should not be confused with an academic test booked for another purpose.
It is a Canadian English benchmark applied to each ability. The table above shows the equivalent results in the three tests; the numbers are not interchangeable between test brands.
That depends on your skills and preparation. Use timed practice and feedback on the weak abilities rather than a promise that one test is easier for all applicants.
The four ability results matter individually. A strong overall result does not establish that every ability meets the intended benchmark.
No. It can improve relevant points components, but the full profile and the particular invitation round determine whether an invitation is issued.
