If your parents are visiting Canada and want more time with the family, start with the date their authorised stay ends. The expiry printed on a visitor visa is not the same thing. A long-validity visa sticker does not, by itself, permit an equally long uninterrupted stay.
This guide, checked against current IRCC guidance on 31 October 2026, explains visitor-record planning for parents already in Canada. It complements our Canada visitor visa guide, which covers travelling to Canada.
A visitor record extends an authorised stay and gives a new departure deadline if approved. It is not a visa and does not guarantee re-entry after travel. An application for more time inside Canada should not be confused with renewing an entry document.
| Document or decision | What to understand |
|---|---|
| Visitor visa in the passport | An entry document; its expiry is not the deadline for the current stay. |
| Entry stamp or existing visitor record | Look for the actual authorised departure date. |
| New visitor record | If approved, records the extended stay and its expiry; it does not guarantee another entry. |
Use the entry stamp and any visitor record, rather than guessing from the visa's validity. Where no stamp or separate document sets the period, ordinary visitor rules generally allow up to six months, subject to applicable limits. The arrival guidance also identifies earlier passport or biometrics expiry as limits where no stamp is issued.
Do not apply the ordinary six-month assumption to a parent with a different authorised period, such as a Super Visa holder. Keep an individual timeline for each parent, including entry date, passport validity and any document setting an expiry.
IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before status expires. The application must be submitted before the current authorised stay ends. Starting a draft or collecting documents is not submission.
As a practical preparation step, work backwards from the actual deadline. Allow time to obtain missing records, explain the reason for the longer visit and review both parents' applications. Do not use the recommended 30-day lead time as permission to wait until the final evening.
When an extension application is submitted before the authorised stay ends, IRCC says the applicant may remain in Canada until a decision under maintained status. This does not mean the extension has been approved. An application rejected as incomplete is treated as never submitted and does not preserve status.
Keep evidence of submission and monitor correspondence. If a family member has a separate deadline, do not assume that the other parent's application protects them too. Avoid making travel plans on the assumption that waiting in Canada and re-entering Canada are the same legal situation.
The file should explain the reason for staying longer, identity, current status, financial support and departure arrangements. The online process provides a personalised checklist.
| Preparation area | Useful review question |
|---|---|
| Reason and requested period | Why is more time needed, and what is the proposed end date? |
| Identity and current stay | Do passport and entry records support the timeline? |
| Support during the visit | Who pays accommodation and living costs, and how is that evidenced? |
| Return arrangements | How will the parent pay for and carry out departure? |
| Consistency across the file | Do dates and explanations agree with earlier applications and actual circumstances? |
A longer visit should have an honest, specific explanation. Do not invent a medical reason, change travel history or describe an indefinite move as a short family visit. Organise records around the actual circumstances rather than copying another family's explanation.
The current IRCC fee list shows CAD 100 per person to extend a visitor's stay. For two parents requesting extensions, that is CAD 200 in these government extension fees. Visitor restoration is separately listed at CAD 246.25, with no visa fee needed for that service.
These amounts are not a complete quotation for professional assistance, translation, travel or other separately required services. An extension request is an application, not a purchased entitlement to remain. The final decision may differ from the period requested.
An ordinary extension is no longer the appropriate application after status expires. Restoration may be available within 90 days of losing status, subject to eligibility and a full explanation. It is not automatic approval or an extra 90 days of visitor status.
Seek an individual review promptly if a deadline was missed or an application was returned. The date of loss of status and the reason matter; a generic extension checklist cannot resolve every expired-status case.
A Super Visa is a separate option for eligible parents or grandparents, with visits of five years at a time and multiple entries for up to ten years. Applicants must be outside Canada when applying. A visitor-record extension inside Canada does not automatically convert an ordinary visitor visa into a Super Visa.
For future long visits, discuss the separate Canada Super Visa route. For parents already visiting, first resolve the current stay deadline. Keep the immediate extension decision separate from a future travel strategy.
Processing times vary and are not an approval promise. Allow for requests for further information and avoid planning around a guaranteed decision date. Do not treat the waiting period as an approved new expiry date.
Peerless Immigration Services can review entry records, requested dates, support evidence and the distinction between extension and restoration. Share each parent's passport details, actual arrival date and current status document for an appropriate review. No extension or visa outcome is guaranteed.

Do not use that date as the deadline for the current stay. Check the entry stamp, visitor record and applicable admission period.
No. IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days ahead; submission must be before the current authorised stay ends.
IRCC describes maintained status until a decision where the extension was submitted before the authorised stay ended. An incomplete application returned as never submitted does not provide that protection.
At CAD 100 per person, the two extension fees total CAD 200. Other services and costs are separate.
No. It is not an entry visa and does not guarantee re-entry. Travel requires a separate review of the applicable entry requirements.
No. The Super Visa has its own requirements and must be applied for from outside Canada.
