For an Indian-qualified nurse, planning a move to Germany starts with professional recognition and German language preparation. An employment offer does not by itself authorise nursing practice. The recognition decision, professional permission and immigration route need to fit together.
This guide explains the decisions to resolve before committing to a course, employer or visa plan. Current official guidance was checked on 30 October 2026. It complements our broader Germany recognition-partnership guide.
Nursing is regulated in Germany. A state permit is required to use the protected professional title and work as a nursing professional. Indian registration or a nursing degree should not be treated as automatic German recognition.
| Decision | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Professional recognition | Whether the foreign nursing qualification meets the requirements of the German reference profession, or what compensatory measures are needed. |
| Permission to practise | Whether the professional requirements, including language, health and personal suitability, have been met. |
| Visa or residence title | Whether the applicant may enter, stay and undertake the authorised activity in Germany. |
The competent authority is linked to the federal state where you intend to work. German professional recognition obtained through that process is valid nationwide. Choose a realistic intended work location before organising the recognition file.
The recognition procedure can identify differences between the foreign qualification and the German nursing qualification. Depending on the outcome, a knowledge test or an adaptation period can address the gaps. Applications can be made from abroad.
Current guidance also describes a voluntary waiver of the document-based equivalence assessment, followed by a compensatory measure. This is not an exemption from nursing standards. The official nursing guidance warns that previous experience and further training will then not be taken into account, so the measure may be more extensive. Obtain individual guidance before deciding to waive an assessment.
The official nursing guidance states at least CEFR B2 German for recognition. Health fitness and evidence of personal suitability are also part of the professional requirements. An English examination does not replace the stated German requirement.
Generic recognition-visa and recognition-partnership information refers to A2 or above, while warning that the profession or qualification measure may need more. For applicants in India, the German mission's recognition checklist specifically lists at least B2 for care professions. Therefore, do not budget or schedule a nursing application on the assumption that A2 alone is sufficient.
| Your position | Route to assess | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Full professional recognition and licence conditions met | Work visa for qualified professionals, with a concrete nursing job offer | Recognition does not replace the job offer or visa requirements. |
| Recognition notice identifies gaps | Visa for recognition of foreign qualifications, with an appropriate qualification measure | The notice and the proposed training must address the same deficits. |
| Recognition to be completed after arrival with an employer | Recognition partnership, where all conditions are met | A suitable employer and written agreement are needed; permission to practise nursing is still separate. |
For regulated professions under a recognition partnership, assistant work can be possible until the licence is obtained, within the permitted arrangement. The job title, contract and authorised duties should accurately reflect that stage. Do not accept a promise that entering Germany immediately gives unrestricted professional nursing rights.
The official nursing page explicitly says that the EU Blue Card does not apply to nursing professionals. Do not use a generic degree-holder or salary-based Blue Card comparison as the basis for this nursing plan.
Recognition records generally include identity documents, a CV, qualification and training evidence, relevant experience and details of any earlier recognition application. Name-change evidence may be needed. The competent authority specifies whether copies, certified copies or originals are required.
Organise a chronology of study, registration and employment. Keep course records, clinical-training information and employer evidence consistent. Record the intended federal state, current German level and any recognition notice alongside the file. This preparation helps identify gaps without inventing a universal document list for every authority.
| Budget item | Verified planning position |
|---|---|
| Recognition procedure | Charges vary by authority and case; there is no single nationwide nursing-recognition fee to quote. |
| Other preparation costs | Translations, certifications, tests, adaptation measures and travel can add to the budget. |
| Recognition visa fee from India | The German mission lists EUR75, payable in INR. Other charges and exemptions depend on the circumstances. |
| Living costs during recognition | Budget for the relevant visa route, remuneration, accommodation and insurance; a course or visa fee is not the entire relocation cost. |
For illustration, the North Rhine-Westphalia government service information states a recognition processing period of up to four months once documents are complete. This is not a nationwide promise that recognition, language learning, training and the visa will all finish within four months. Build the timeline around your actual outstanding steps.
Prepare your qualification, registration history, employment record, German language evidence and any recognition decision for a consultation. Peerless Immigration Services can help organise document gaps and immigration-planning questions within its work-authorisation service scope. Recognition and licensing decisions remain with the competent German authorities. No employer placement, recognition outcome, visa or permanent residence is guaranteed.

No. German recognition and the required professional permission must be addressed separately from Indian registration.
Do not assume so. The Indian mission’s recognition checklist specifies at least B2 for care professions, and the nursing recognition guidance also identifies B2.
A knowledge test or adaptation period can address qualification gaps. The recognition decision and the applicable procedure determine the next step.
No. The partnership can support completing recognition after arrival, but professional nursing practice still requires the appropriate licence.
The official German nursing guidance states that the EU Blue Card does not apply to nursing professionals.
No. Visa charges, language learning, translations, examinations or adaptation measures, travel and living expenses can be separate.
