Changes to the UK's T2 Minister of Religion and Temporary Work – Religious Worker routes take effect on 29 October 2026. They were announced in Statement of Changes HC 584, published on 3 September; the announcement date and commencement date are different.
The implementation provision applies the religious-route amendments from 29 October. Applications made before that date remain subject to the Immigration Rules in force on 28 October 2026.
The amended rules distinguish leading pastoral responsibilities from religious support work. A minister whose core duties involve leading a congregation's rites, rituals and preaching must use the T2 Minister of Religion route. Temporary Religious Worker sponsorship must satisfy the specified job conditions.
Those conditions include an additional role beyond normal staffing, membership of a religious order with mainly communal residence, or qualifying recent overseas service with the sponsor's affiliated faith organisation. The overseas-service option requires at least six months immediately before application and supporting confirmation.
Both official visa guides require sponsorship by an appropriately licensed organisation and a Certificate of Sponsorship. An offer from a faith community should therefore be assessed together with the actual duties and sponsorship arrangements.
The T2 Minister of Religion route can lead to settlement, subject to its requirements. Temporary Religious Worker permission is limited to two years and is not a settlement route. Applicants should discuss the intended role and long-term plans before treating the routes as interchangeable.
For an Indian applicant, a useful preparation step is to ask the UK organisation for a clear description of duties and the proposed route. This helps identify inconsistencies before the application is prepared; it does not guarantee sponsorship or approval.
