AASW Assessment for Indian Social Workers: Evidence Guide

AASW Assessment for Indian Social Workers: Evidence Guide

An Indian social work degree, a positive skills assessment and an Australian visa are different parts of a migration plan. Before paying for an assessment, organise evidence of what you studied, how your placements were structured and which English-language pathway you can meet.

This guide was checked against Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) guidance on 31 October 2026. It focuses on overseas-qualified social workers and complements our Australia skills assessment guide.

What does AASW assess?

AASW assesses overseas social work qualifications for migration and membership eligibility for employment purposes. A related degree alone, such as sociology or psychology, is insufficient without a professional social work qualification. A positive assessment does not itself provide a job, nomination, invitation or visa.

Five criteria: look beyond the name of your degree

The qualification must specifically be in social work, have professional standing in the training country and comparable learning outcomes. Field education must include at least 1,000 hours across two placements with contrasting practice foci, including direct practice. The English standard is a separate criterion.

For a BSW or MSW holder, the useful preparation question is what the university can document. Create an index linking the award, transcript, course content and placement records. If you hold a postgraduate qualification, include the relevant undergraduate records rather than assuming that the highest award tells the whole story.

Fieldwork gaps need an individual assessment

The AASW guide says that fewer than 500 fieldwork hours or only one placement prevents a positive assessment; further placement is required. For more than 500 but fewer than 1,000 hours across at least two placements, specified evidence may address a deficit. Employment is not an automatic substitute.

Do not convert a period of NGO employment into academic placement hours without evidence. Keep the university's placement description separate from later paid or voluntary roles. If a record is missing, identify the gap before presenting a confident claim about eligibility.

English: AASW and visa requirements differ

AASW currently accepts IELTS Academic, with One Skill Retake where its conditions are met. PTE is not an alternative under this policy. One sitting requires at least 7.0 in every component. Two sittings within six months may be combined to reach 7.0 in each component, provided none is below 6.5.

The One Skill Retake route requires three initial components at 7.0 or above, the remaining component at least 6.5, and a retake result of at least 7.0 within 60 days of an eligible computer test. Results must be within three years of the assessment application; the retake must also be within 12 months.

English-medium education in India alone does not establish the education-based exemption: AASW specifies both secondary and tertiary study conditions in listed countries. Its professional standard and Home Affairs' visa English rules must be assessed separately.

Prepare an evidence file, not just certificates

Record groupPreparation focus
Academic evidenceAwards, transcripts, course outline and the IQA Course Information Form; include undergraduate records where relevant.
Placement evidenceRecord the hours, settings, supervision and practice focus of each placement, using university evidence.
Professional historyCV and relevant employment evidence; distinguish post-qualifying experience from student placement.
English and identityKeep official results and consistent personal details ready. Follow the designated identity-verification process.

Use this as an organising framework, not a substitute for the application-specific checklist. Where institutional records disagree with a CV, resolve the discrepancy honestly. A clear chronology is more useful than a large set of unexplained attachments.

Fees, GST and what the amount includes

On 31 October, AASW's public schedule still labels the following figures FY 2025–26, effective 1 July 2025. These are the displayed amounts, not a separately confirmed FY 2026–27 tariff or a quotation for every applicant.

AssessmentOutside-Australia correspondence addressWithin-Australia correspondence address
International qualification assessmentAUD 2,123.64AUD 2,336.00 including GST
Optional skilled employment assessment: 1–3 positionsAUD 943.64AUD 1,038.00 including GST

The employment assessment is additional to qualification assessment. Further positions and optional doctorate assessment have separate charges. Budget separately for English testing, document preparation and any visa application.

AASW states fees are charged in Australian dollars and generally non-refundable. An Australian-based agent or third party must pay GST even if the client is overseas. A specific exception applies when an optional employment assessment cannot proceed after an unsuccessful qualification assessment: its fee is refunded less AUD 100 administration, or AUD 110 including GST where correspondence is within Australia.

Before payment, the application plan should identify the selected assessment, correspondence arrangement, applicable tax and payable amount. Do not rely on an old fee screenshot or treat the assessment charge as the complete cost of migration.

How long should you allow?

AASW asks applicants to allow six to eight weeks from the date the file is deemed pending assessment, meaning ready for an assessor. This is not a promise measured from payment. Optional employment assessment can take longer.

Build your own preparation period into the plan: university records, missing placement evidence and English preparation may need attention before a file is ready. Avoid booking a move or resigning on the assumption that an assessment estimate guarantees a visa timeline.

How does this support Australian PR planning?

The assessment helps establish the professional qualification component of a migration plan; it does not decide the complete immigration outcome. Plan the assessment and the intended visa together without treating either as an approval of the other. Our Australia PR guide explains the wider pathway context.

Peerless Immigration Services can discuss your qualifications, placement evidence, English results and assessment purpose, and help identify the questions requiring individual review. Share your actual documents rather than relying on another applicant's result.

Frequently asked questions

Does an Indian MSW guarantee a positive AASW assessment?

No. The qualification, professional standing, learning outcomes, field education and English evidence must be assessed. The degree title alone is insufficient.

Can I use PTE for the AASW English requirement?

The current AASW policy accepts IELTS Academic and qualifying One Skill Retake arrangements. Do not substitute a test merely because a visa accepts it.

Can work experience automatically replace missing placement hours?

No. The guide sets limits and specific evidence pathways. A placement deficit needs individual consideration.

Does the qualification fee include skilled employment assessment?

No. The displayed schedule lists optional employment assessment separately; the fee table above identifies the distinction.

Does six to eight weeks start when I pay?

The published estimate starts when the file is deemed pending assessment, not simply at payment. Optional employment assessment may take longer.

Does a positive AASW assessment grant Australian PR?

No. It is an assessment outcome, not a nomination, invitation, job offer or visa grant.
