Visa Processing Time

The processing time for a visa application varies based on several factors, including the information stated in the application and the purpose of the visit. Here is a breakdown of the processing time:

Standard Processing (Tourist, Short-term Visits, etc.):

  • Visa issuance typically takes 5 working days from the day following the date of receipt of the application, assuming there are no issues with the application.

Possible Delays:

  • It’s important to note that processing times may be extended if there is a high volume of visa applications received within a short period. In such cases, applicants should anticipate longer processing times.

Content-Related Issues:

  • If there are any problems or discrepancies in the content of the application, the Embassy/Consulate General may need to transmit the application to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo for further examination. This can significantly extend the processing time, and visa issuance may take more than a month in such cases.

Work or Long-Term Stay Visa Applications:

  • For visa applications related to work or long-term stays, it is strongly recommended that applicants obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the regional Immigration bureau in Japan before submitting their visa application. Failure to submit this certificate can lead to significantly extended processing times, typically ranging from one to three months, regardless of the content of the application.

Validity of the Visa

Single-Entry Visas:

  • Valid for a single entry into Japan.
  • Period of validity is three months.
  • Visa bearer must apply for landing and undergo an examination before visa expiry.
  • Visa becomes invalid upon application for landing or reaching the expiry date, whichever comes first.

Extension of Visa Validity:

  • Not possible for single-entry visas.
  • If a foreign national in Japan wishes to extend their period of stay, they should consult with the regional immigration bureau.

Multiple-Entry Visas:

  • Issued to business travelers and others.
  • Period of validity ranges from one to five years.
  • Multiple-entry visas can be used any number of times during their period of validity.
