For an Indian physiotherapist planning Australia, a qualification, a professional registration and a migration skills assessment answer different questions. Paying for one does not automatically secure the others. This guide, checked on 5 November 2026, explains the order to assess before committing to examinations, travel or a visa strategy.
| Decision | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Council assessment pathway | Whether the Australian Physiotherapy Council assesses your competence against Australian practice standards |
| Ahpra registration | The professional permission required for physiotherapy practice, with the applicable registration conditions |
| Migration skills assessment | A separate Council report used for relevant skilled visa purposes |
| Visa decision | Immigration permission; an assessment outcome does not guarantee a visa, invitation or job |
The Council’s Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP) requires an overseas physiotherapy qualification at least at diploma level and the relevant unrestricted registration or legal ability to practise in the country of training. A degree title alone does not establish that every requirement is met.
Express FLYR and FLYR have specified country and jurisdiction criteria. India is not listed as a qualifying country on either published pathway list. If your training and registration history is entirely Indian, assess APEP rather than assuming an expedited route. Someone with additional overseas qualifications or registration needs their full history considered against the relevant pathway criteria.
The published stages are Eligibility Assessment, Cultural Safety Training, Written Assessment, Capability Assessment and Clinical Workshop. The workshop is a one-day, face-to-face session in Melbourne. Plan the travel separately from the earlier remote stages. The Council describes approximately nine months for candidates progressing as quickly as possible; this is not a guaranteed completion date.
Organise the passport identity page, any name-change evidence, entry-level physiotherapy award, complete official subject results and the applicable evidence of registration or ability to practise. Resolve inconsistent names and incomplete academic records early. The Council’s eligibility factsheet includes specific evidence options for qualifications completed in India.
Its upload instructions call for readable colour scans of originals at 300 dpi or more, with all edges visible, in PDF format. For documents outside English, prepare the original-language document and a complete official translation, including seals and stamps. Keep clinical and employment records organised for the separate purposes for which they may be needed. This guide does not replace the pathway-specific document list.
The Council says its assessment examinations are conducted in English, but an English test is not an entry requirement for those assessments. English evidence is nevertheless required for Ahpra registration and for the Council’s migration skills assessment. Do not treat admission to an assessment as an English exemption for registration or immigration.
After Eligibility Assessment and Cultural Safety Training, an Interim Certificate is valid for two years. It meets one requirement for limited registration for supervised practice; it is not general registration or an automatic right to start work. The Final Certificate supports the next general-registration application. Any registration conditions still need to be satisfied.
The following AUD amounts are displayed on the Council’s fee page dated 21 October 2026. Payment is required with each assessment application.
| Assessment item | Displayed fee (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Eligibility Assessment | 1,170 |
| Cultural Safety Training | 242 |
| Written Assessment | 2,078 |
| Capability Assessment | 2,928 |
| Clinical Workshop | 1,903 |
| APEP total shown by the Council | 8,321 |
| Complete migration skills assessment | 1,674 |
| Additional migration skills assessment | 1,471 |
These are assessment charges, not an all-inclusive migration budget. Allow separately for registration, English evidence, translations, travel, accommodation and any visa costs. Resits can add costs. The displayed fee page does not identify GST treatment, so no assumed GST adjustment is added here; obtain the actual invoice for the applicable charge.
The refund policy generally provides no refund for assessment cancellation or withdrawal after payment, and treats rescheduling as cancellation. Exceptional circumstances may be considered with supporting evidence; a refund-processing administration fee of AUD 56 applies. Do not book on the assumption that an unused assessment is refundable.
A first migration application uses the Complete Skills Assessment. The Council requires its English standard plus an eligible qualification or certificate route, such as its Final Certificate. An Interim Certificate is not accepted. Other published routes include specified Australian or New Zealand qualifications and registration circumstances; Indian applicants should not assume that an Indian degree alone satisfies this separate stage.
Work-experience evidence is required where skilled employment is claimed, with specific requirements for a New Zealand work-based eligibility route. Match the periods being claimed to the actual records. For wider assessment planning, read our Australia skills assessment guide. This occupation-specific guide does not promise a particular visa or state nomination outcome.
First establish the correct Council pathway from the actual qualification and registration history. Next close document gaps and plan English evidence for registration and migration separately. Build a stage-by-stage assessment and travel budget. Review the intended registration and visa position before relying on a job start date. If moving with family, budget separately for each person’s immigration and travel arrangements; the Council’s assessment fee does not provide family travel permission.
