Immigration New Zealand has announced student-visa changes effective from 27 October 2026. They affect research-master's work rights, English-language assessment, processing where education-provider compliance is in question, and the visa period after certain courses end.
INZ's detailed work guidance says new applicants for master's-by-research student visas will no longer receive unlimited in-study work rights. The announcement sets master's work conditions at 25 hours weekly during study, with full-time work during eligible holidays.
Current holders should not assume that the announcement automatically rewrites an existing eVisa. Their individual work conditions govern their employment. PhD students remain a separate group under INZ's work guidance.
English ability is now expressly identified as a factor in assessing whether an applicant can comply with student-visa conditions. The announcement does not state a new universal IELTS score for every applicant.
INZ may also suspend processing in a wider range of provider-compliance situations, including while non-compliance is being determined. This is not an announcement that all student-visa processing has stopped.
Where the student visa period was one month after course completion, INZ is extending it to two months. The separate 31 March expiry arrangement is unchanged. This should not be described as a blanket two-month extension for every current visa or as a new work visa.
Students should budget around the work entitlement actually granted. INZ's general guidance makes holiday work conditional on the programme and the eVisa; a scheduled break does not automatically create unrestricted work rights for every student. The type of work allowed after a course also depends on the visa conditions and remaining validity.
A credible study plan should explain the programme choice, academic background, funding and intended next step. INZ assesses genuine intentions, attendance and progress. An honest intention to pursue an eligible post-study visa can be declared; it should not be replaced by an invented plan to leave immediately after study.
